MINISTER’S ANNUAL STUDY LEAVE ACTIVITIES - 2011

Purpose:
COM, through its Pastoral Care Subcommittee, seeks to care for teaching elders and their congregations (or employing agencies) by encouraging the sharing of wisdom gleaned from study leave. We also hope to monitor whether the current presbytery minimum funding for study leave is sufficient. This report will help us achieve both purposes. Please be mindful of these intentions when submitting your report to Presbytery.
Please note that, according to Presbytery COM policy a summary of study leave activities is to be shared at a regular meeting of session. The clerks are to record in the minutes that this has occurred.
The report should include the following information (which may be used to report to session as well):

1. Name and today’s date
2. Church or Employing Organization
3. Use of Study Leave between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011
o Please tell us the names of classes, seminars, conferences, etc. that you attended, if any.
o The dates of your study leave(s).
o What is the amount of your annual continuing education budget? How much did you use this year – total?
o Did you need to supplement your study leave budget with personal funds or grant monies in order to attend events during the year? If so, could you give us an estimated amount of additional funds used?
4. Optional information for sharing with others via the presbytery website:
o What were your hopes in registering for event(s) you attended?
o Did you read any books, watch any DVDs, etc. that you would recommend (and what were they)?
o What was the most helpful thing you learned or experienced?
o Would you recommend it to others?
o Would you be willing to lead (or share leadership for) a workshop for presbytery or for a session on what you have learned or experienced?

Today is October 27, 2011.
I continue to be employed by the Carmichael Presbyterian Church.
During the year 2011 I participated in the Pastor’s Preaching retreat at Zephyr on Oct. 2-4, followed by a few additional days of reading and study, Oct. 5-9. The retreat featuring Dr. Cleo LaRue was terrific, you would have enjoyed it. Cleo is an outstanding preacher, so to just sit and listen and take it in was incredible, in addition to the insights and review he provided. Tahoe isn’t too shabby either. Cost was about $50, plus mileage and a few meals.
My annual study leave amount is the presbytery required $1,000 and I of course did not need to supplement any expenses with personal funds. That was the extent of my study leave in 2011.

I always recommend the pastor’s retreat at Zephyr and the music by Jim Martinez was terrific. Thanks Pamela for the grant that makes this all possible.

Blessings,
Keith L. DeVries
